In May 1999, the first Miami Fashion Week
was presented to an international audience of buyers, media, celebrities
and special guests. At this time, the world famous Venezuelan designer,
Carolina Herrera asked the FWA organizers to create a fashion council
to promote Latin American designers as international rather than folkloric.
In September 1999 the Council of Latin American Fashion Designers, Inc.
was formed. Miami Fashion Week was created to provide a forum offering
international exposure and promotion specifically for the designers of
Latin America and the Caribbean with a special interest in establishing
bridges and opportunities between the designers of this region and the
world's fashion industry. Guided by an international board of directors, the Council of Latin
American Fashion Designers, Inc. a non-profit corporation will guide
the efforts of Miami Fashion Week and work to promote the fashion
designers of Latin America and the Caribbean as well as promoting international
cultural exchange.
